Many hospitals and healthcare providers are expanding in South Florida with new facilities.

Feb 3, 2025

The population growth in the region has generated the need for more health services. Additionally, South Florida has a large population of elderly people, which drives a greater demand for medical care.

Despite the high construction costs and elevated interest rates that make financing more expensive, many health systems have decided that it is best to move forward with the construction of new facilities at this time.

Below is a look at the development projects in the health sector in the three-county region:

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami

The University of Miami Health System and its Miller School of Medicine are constructing a new 12-story building for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. With a total area of 244,000 square feet, the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building will open at 1425 N.W. 10th Ave. in 2025. It will house more than 240 cancer specialists and scientists.

Mount Sinai Medical Center

The nonprofit hospital is building the Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center on its Miami Beach campus. The 220,000-square-foot facility will be ready in 2025 and will include 55 examination rooms, 56 chemotherapy spaces, and phlebotomy stations for up to 10 patients.

Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital in South Miami

Baptist Health South Florida and Lifepoint Rehabilitation began construction on a rehabilitation hospital in South Miami in July. Located on a 2.42-acre site at 6201 Sunset Drive, the Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital will have three floors covering 100,000 square feet, with 62 private rooms for inpatients and parking for 179 vehicles. It will also have the capacity to add 30 additional private rooms in the future. Its opening is expected in 2026.

Independent Emergency Room of Broward Health in Sunrise

The public health system is building an independent emergency room in Sunrise. The 18,041-square-foot facility, located at 9001 W. Oakland Park Blvd., will be operated in conjunction with Memorial Healthcare System, which will provide staff from its Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to offer pediatric emergency services. It is expected to open in 2025.

Expansion of the Jackson Health System Emergency Department

The public health system has begun construction on a $300 million expansion of the emergency department at its main campus. The new two-story facility will have a total area of 130,000 square feet. The project will also include the renovation of the existing emergency department, which is approximately 45,000 square feet. Its completion is anticipated in 2027.

Renovation of Memorial Healthcare System

An $88 million renovation is underway at the system's main hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. Its maternity area "Family Birthplace" is being redesigned, covering 59,150 square feet with 54 private postpartum rooms and 18 prenatal care rooms. The Level 1 Trauma Center and emergency room are also being modernized, with three new trauma rooms designed to care for up to two patients per room. The maternity area renovation is expected to be completed by the end of this year, while the renovated emergency room will be ready in early 2025.

UHealth at SoLé Mia, North Miami

The University of Miami Health System is progressing with the construction of a 363,000-square-foot outpatient facility in the SoLé Mia development in North Miami. Located on a 10-acre site, UHealth SoLé Mia will feature 110 examination rooms, 10 operating rooms, and 33 cancer treatment rooms. It is expected to open in 2025.

NYU Langone Health in West Palm Beach

The health arm of New York University will build a 77,000-square-foot medical building in West Palm Beach to accommodate up to 50 physicians. Named in honor of benefactors of the Julia Koch Family Foundation, the seven-story building will be located on a 0.65-acre site at 324 Datura St. Its opening is anticipated in 2026.

Expansion of Memorial Regional Hospital

Memorial Healthcare System has presented plans to the city of Hollywood to expand the hospital with a new eight-story tower. The facility will cover 292,662 square feet and will primarily house operating rooms, intensive care beds, and areas for medical staff. It will include 150 additional beds.

Expansion of Jupiter Medical Center

The nonprofit provider has received approval for an addition of 92 beds to its main campus. The new building will be five stories tall and a total of 135,000 square feet.

Microhospital at Avenir, Jupiter Medical Center

Jupiter Medical Center plans to build a 29-bed "microhospital" in the Avenir community in Palm Beach Gardens. Although the University of Florida is no longer part of the project, the president and CEO of JMC, Dr. Amit Rastogi, assures that it is still on track and will open in 2026.

Holy Cross Hospital in Deerfield Beach

The nonprofit hospital may convert an old commercial property at 340 S. Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach into a medical center. The 24,376-square-foot facility would include a 13,523-square-foot independent emergency room with 13 treatment rooms and imaging diagnostic equipment, as well as a 10,853-square-foot clinic with 19 examination rooms and a physical therapy center.

HCA Palms West Hospital

The acute care hospital in Loxahatchee has proposed a new patient tower with an investment of $78 million, as well as a $17 million expansion of its surgical services. Additionally, it recently completed a $15 million expansion of its emergency area.
